We have English fallow deer skins, which are from the thick winter coat of wild fallow deer from Sussex. We source these skins directly from people who hunt the deer for venison, and these skins would otherwise be discarded as a waste product. We spend time with the skins making sure that they are well prepared, and then take them to be tanned. The deerskins that result are really amazing, and we believe they're well worth the effort.
Each deerskin has slightly different markings, and the winter coat of fallow deer varies according to what the deer's summer markings were. Most fallow deer are of a 'common' colouring - these are a soft brown with white dapples in the summer, and they turn to a rich chocolate brown with slightly paler dapples in the winter. We occasionally get the more unusual black (melanistic) or white (menil) fallow deer.
We occasionally have English red deer, or can tan them to order, so do contact us should you wish to follow this up. We can also source top quality reindeer hides - these have a waterproof silicone backing so are quite suitable for putting directly on the ground.
Some people ask about 'hairslip', and this is a good point of concern. When this happens, a deerskin will 'moult' hairs if stroked. Hairslip can occur if the skins haven't been prepared correctly, and alas, once it has started to happen, it can't be stopped or reversed. We check for hairslip before taking our skins to be tanned, and this way we can be sure that our skins are of premium quality and have no hairslip at all - if they did and we had them tanned, we'd risk the skin returning to us with either bald patches, or with lots of loose hairs! We'd also risk having unhappy customers and we like to keep our customers happy!
